Winter wedding with editorial vibes at Gara Rock Hotel, Devon
Aoife and James planned a super stylish, elegant celebration at Gara Rock near Salcombe in Devon—just a few weeks before Christmas. Sure, summer weddings have their charm with golden light and long balmy evenings, but give me twinkly lights, flash portraits and moody dance floors any day. This winter wedding had all of that and more. With a black-tie dress code, soft candlelight, and a champagne tower to get the party started, the whole day had a cinematic, timeless feel.
Gara Rock is a contemporary cliffside hotel with sweeping sea views, just a short drive from Salcombe. It's sleek, secluded and full of thoughtful luxury touches—from its spa and cinema room to the gorgeous styling throughout. With exclusive use of the entire venue, Aoife and James had the perfect setting to host their loved ones in comfort and style.
The morning was wonderfully calm and intimate. With the benefit of having all the suites to themselves, both Aoife and James got ready on site in separate rooms. I joined the groomsmen for a few relaxed, candid shots before they headed to the lounge, while upstairs Aoife’s glam squad—Sophie White (MUA) and Toni Gogola (Hair Stylist)—worked their magic.
The ceremony took place in the restaurant, a beautifully lit space filled with love and emotion. Afterwards, guests gathered in the lounge for champagne and cocktails as Dan Costin lit up the room with his saxophone set. The energy was high, and the champagne tower only added to the festive, celebratory feel. Stylish canapés made the rounds, and the party vibes were well and truly flowing.
The wedding breakfast featured elegant round tables dressed in a classic black and white palette, designed by Laura Louise Hall with stunning florals by Caroline Hodges. Every detail was thoughtful and refined. During speeches, there were plenty of laughs (and a few tears) as James declared his love for his beautiful new wife—and the room was full of warmth as they stepped into their next chapter together as a family.
As the light faded, we stepped out for a few portraits—just the two of them—before heading back in for one of the most joyful dance floors I’ve seen in a while. Apollo Music brought the house down from the first dance onwards, with confetti cannons launching as Aoife and James took to the floor.
I can only imagine how late the party continued into the night, but I left with my creative cup feeling totally full. These two created a day that was stylish, heartfelt and effortlessly cool—and I loved every second.
So if you're dreaming of a winter wedding, I hope Aoife and James’ celebration gives you all the inspiration. To my wonderful couple and their beautiful friends and family: thank you for letting me be part of such a magical day. I felt so welcomed and it was a true honour to capture it all.
